HPSJ’s Books on Buses event to help support literacy (Stockton Record, MY RECORD feature, August 26, 2015)
Health Plan of San Joaquin held a daylong Books on Buses book drive Aug. 19 in its French Camp parking lot. Attendees from HPSJ and their invited neighbors — San Joaquin General Hospital, Mary Graham Children’s Shelter and VA Stockton — brought hundreds of new or gently used books to fill an RTD bus that was stationed in HPSJ’s parking lot for the day.
This book drive was in support of countywide literacy efforts by San Joaquin Regional Transit District as it introduces a new program called Books on Buses. Books on Buses formally launched Aug. 21. Health Plan of San Joaquin is a Books on Buses sponsor. HPSJ decided to hold this event as part of its own long-term campaign to promote literacy, especially health literacy.
