Be a Myth Buster for Flu Safety: The 2020-2021 Season
Health Plan of San Joaquin asks everyone to be a MYTH BUSTER FOR FLU SAFETY during the Covid-19 pandemic. The source for the following is the CDC web page, Misconceptions about Seasonal Flu and Flu Vaccines. Learn more at https://www.cdc.gov/flu/prevent/misconceptions.htm.
|The Myth||The Facts|
|With kids staying home to learn, they do not need a flu shot – or other childhood shots.||Not true! You still need to protect them. |
They can easily be exposed from when you go to the grocery or drug store, or when they are just outside, and a young child wants to hug them – as children do!
|Only kids who are school aged need the flu shot.||Anyone over 6 months of age should receive the flu shot if they are not allergic.|
|The flu shot gives you flu.||No! The flu shot cannot cause the flu. |
Flu shots are made with killed viruses, or with only a single protein from the flu. The nose spray has live viruses that are weakened so that they will not cause you to get sick.
|Getting sick with the flu is better for you than getting the shot.||No! Flu can be a tough disease|
This is true for kids, older adults, and people with certain life-long health issues.
Any person who has the flu can have serious problems, long hospital stays or death. Even healthy children and adults can have this happen. Thus, getting the shot is a safer choice than risk getting sick to try and protect yourself.
|You don’t need a flu shot every year.||Not true!|
A yearly flu shot for all people 6 months of age and older is needed. Why? Because:
1.A person’s ability to fight the virus from the shot lessens over time. So, a yearly shot is needed to be safe against the flu.
2. Flu viruses are changing, so the shot make-up is reviewed each year. Edits are made as needed based on which germ is making people sick.
3. The flu is virus that changes year to year. A yearly flu shot protects you from the virus for that year.
|You can get the flu shot, then still get sick.||Maybe, but think about this! |
Research from 2017 showed the flu shot shortened sickness, and even saved lives. It reduced deaths, hospital admits, and total time in care for those with flu.
In 2018, studies showed over half of adults that had to get medical help with the flu didn’t have to go to the ICU. Adults also spent 4 less days in the ICU all because they got the flu shot.
|A flu shot is better than other ways to be safe.||There are many vaccine options to choose from!|
The vital thing is for all people 6 months and older to get a flu shot each year. If you have questions about which choice is best for you, talk to your doctor.
|I’m staying home a lot. I don’t need the flu shot until I decide to leave my house.||The flu shot protects you for the entire flu season. Getting the flu shot early protects you for longer.|
|The flu shot doesn’t last very long. I should wait to get it later.||It can take up to two weeks for the flu shot to take effect. Protect yourself now and keep your family safe.|
