National Children’s Dental Health Month – February 2023

National Children’s Dental Health Month(French Camp, CA) – Cavities, also known as caries or tooth decay, are one of the most common chronic diseases of childhood, yet cavities are preventable. Children who have poor oral health often miss more school resulting in lower grades than children who do not. One of the best ways to stop cavities in little teeth is to make sure children get fluoride. Fluoride encourages “remineralization” which is the process that makes teeth stronger and more resistant to cavities. For children younger than eight, fluoride helps make the adult teeth that are growing under the gums strong. Many areas have fluoridated water, Stanislaus and San Joaquin County do not.

National Children’s Dental Health MonthFluoride varnish applied in the doctor’s office can stop cavities, slow them down, or stop them from getting worse. Fluoride supplements are available by prescription and are used by children aged 0 to 16 years old. As an HPSJ member, there is no cost to you for this help.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends a smear (grain of rice amount) of fluoride toothpaste be used until the child’s 3rd birthday. After which a pea-sized amount may be used.

Keep 1-2-3 tips in mind for pain free, happy smiles:

  • 1st birthday, 1st visit to the dentist– Visit Smile California or call 800-322-6384 for the Medi-Cal dental program.
  • 2 minutes, 2 times per day- Help your children brush their teeth two minutes, two times per day for good breath, less cavities and to dodge painful problems. Play a two-minute song or use a tooth brush timer.
  • 3 Fluoride varnish applications per year– A varnish, or topcoat, of fluoride can be put onto the teeth up to 3 times in 12 months. It can help stop cavities, slow it down, or stop them from getting worse. Ask your doctor about Fluoride varnish.
