Overview:
Join us for an engaging lunchtime CASE session with David Jay from Marshall Medical as we explore what our community needs to know about kratom by exploring emerging trends, risks, and prevention considerations.
- As kratom use continues to rise, many people still believe it is a safe or “natural” alternative.
- However, providers across healthcare and behavioral health settings are increasingly seeing individuals experience significant dependence and withdrawal after use.
- Because kratom products are not FDA-regulated and can vary widely in potency, many users may not fully understand the potential risks.
Drawing from his frontline clinical experience and community education work, David will provide a clear, practical overview of this emerging concern. This session will also address how stigma can prevent individuals from seeking help and what compassionate, informed responses can look like in our communities.
Learning Objectives:
- What kratom is and why use is increasing
- How kratom affects the brain and body
- Risks associated with high-potency and 7-OH products
- Signs of dependence and withdrawal to watch for
- How stigma impacts help-seeking and recovery
- Ways community partners can respond with informed, compassionate support
Whether you work in prevention, healthcare, education, behavioral health, or community outreach, this brief but impactful session will help you stay informed and better prepared to respond to this evolving substance use trend.
