In March 2020, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) temporarily waived certain Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) requirements and conditions in response to COVID-19. The easing of these rules helped people with Medicaid (Medi-Cal in California) and CHIP keep their health coverage during the pandemic. However, a new law ends Medicaid continuous coverage on March 31, 2023, and requires states to restart eligibility renewals beginning April 1, 2023.

HPSJ is requesting the support of our provider community to participate in helping help inform our beneficiaries of the Medi-Cal renewal process, so they do not lose their coverage.

MEDI-CAL RENEWALS: NEXT STEPS to Help your Medi-Cal Patients Keep Their Coverage

Beginning in April 2023 through June 2024, those covered by Medi-Cal will receive a letter from their County Offices in the mail. These letters will advise beneficiaries that either (1) their Medi-Cal was renewed automatically OR (2) the county needs more information for future eligibility.

Here are some of the things you can do to help your patients keep their coverage:

  • If you serve Medi-Cal beneficiaries, remind them to look out for a notice or packet asking for more information to determine future eligibility.
  • Notices of auto-renewal and packets for renewals will come in a yellow envelope.
  • If a beneficiary’s demographic information has changed (or they are not sure what is on file), ask them to review their Medi-Cal account through their BenefitsCal account at Beneftiscal.com. Beneficiaries can also create an account on http://www.benefitscal.com/.

Beneficiaries that receive a renewal packet or a notice asking for more information have a limited time to respond to remain eligible for Medi-Cal coverage. Documents must be submitted timely to avoid delay or cancellation.
